South Willow Lake Hike

This past Sunday we made plans to go on a hike to South Willow Lake.  South Willow Canyon is practically in our back yard so we didn’t have to go very far to final a beautiful place to go hiking! I ended up taking over 250 photos on this hike and tried to pare it down to the best ones. ;)

We brought our Ryker dog with us and decided this would be a great starter hike to see how well we would all do as it’s been several years  that we’ve done any family hikes, let alone taking Ryker with us.

Jake, Gwynie, Brady and Ryker (our Siberian Husky)

Ryker was such a good pup on our hike!

Check out Brady jumping over the tree branch!

We thought this was going to be a 7 mile hike round trip based on the website, but silly us - it was actually 7 miles EACH WAY. We realized it about 4 miles in when we still weren’t at the lake but decided to keep going. 14 miles was rough, but we actually had a blast!

We got to this part in our hike and it was so green and gorgeous that  I was singing and shouting, “The hiiiiiiillllllls are aliiiiiiive with the sound of muuuuuusic!!”

We took quite a few breaks, especially water breaks for this pup.

We were seriously blown away by how beautiful everything was way up in the mountains! It amazes me that SNOW can still be up in the mountains in June.

Loved all of the little creeks and streams we saw!

As we got higher we were getting some excellent views of the Great Salt Lake.

Gwynie used to hate taking pictures when she was little and thank goodness she has outgrown that weird habit! She kept finding places for me to take photos of her along the hike. I love this girl!

The girls and the boys.

We came upon this tree and it literally took my breath away. I was freaking out it was so pretty and amazing!

She is still so pretty after hiking almost 6 miles here!

By this point when we took a break Jake said if we didn’t find the lake in the next 20 minutes we were going to have to turn back. We had started around 12:30ish and it was about 3:30 by this point and we were still going to have to walk back the other 7 miles. ;) Plus we were all pretty exhausted from such a steep hike.  Ryker was getting pretty tired too and loved laying under Jake’s feet getting some shade.  :)

About 10 minutes later we reached the lake! We were soooo happy!

Surprisingly, Ryker is not a fan of the water. He kept balancing on these two rocks and were laughing so hard at him! It reminded me of an elephant balancing on a ball at one point. :)

We hung out for a little while at the lake and then decided we needed to head down the mountain before it got too dark. I didn’t take any pictures on the way back, we were going along at a great pace!

We finally made it back down to the car around 6:30….what a long but fun day! I wore my pedometer (should have worn my Polar watch) and it said we had taken over 22,205 steps, wow! We are so glad we did it and despite being a pretty grueling first hike the kids can’t wait to do it again! We’re looking at different trails to try next and ones where we can bring Ryker with us as well. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Gwynie has a pick-up softball game tonight so we’re off to the ball fields again! :)
